OpenAI introduces Canvas, a new interface that enhances collaboration with ChatGPT for writing and coding projects, offering users more control, editing tools, and focused assistance.
OpenAI has launched Canvas, a new interface for ChatGPT that helps users handle complex writing and coding tasks more effectively. Unlike the regular chat window, Canvas opens separately, giving you a space to collaborate with ChatGPT on projects that require more than just simple conversation. It's built with the latest GPT-4o model and is currently available in beta for ChatGPT Plus and Team users. Enterprise and Edu users will get access next week, and Canvas will roll out to all free users after beta.
Canvas makes working on writing and coding projects smoother. It allows you to highlight sections of your text or code so ChatGPT can focus on specific areas. This setup is especially useful for tasks that need revision or detailed feedback. In Canvas, you can directly edit your work and use built-in shortcuts for adjustments. For writing, ChatGPT can suggest edits, change the text length, adjust reading level, and polish grammar. For coding, it can review your code, fix bugs, add comments, and even translate code between different programming languages.
The interface is designed to be intuitive, offering control over your projects while ChatGPT provides in-depth assistance. You can restore previous versions of your work if needed, making it easier to manage drafts and revisions. Additionally, Canvas can open automatically when ChatGPT detects it might be useful, or you can manually switch to it by typing "use canvas" in your prompt.
OpenAI has trained the GPT-4o model to trigger Canvas at the right moments, focusing on tasks like article writing or code editing without over-activating it for simpler questions. They also optimized the model to decide when to make small edits or full rewrites, improving overall efficiency. For coding, the model offers better comments and suggestions, making it easier to follow revisions and debug code.
Currently in beta, Canvas is part of OpenAI's ongoing efforts to improve how people work with AI on creative and technical projects. By offering more control and better feedback, Canvas brings a new level of collaboration between users and ChatGPT, helping make writing and coding more efficient.
