Discover the new features in iOS 18, including customizable Home Screens, AI-powered Safari, and satellite messaging.

Apple has officially announced iOS 18, the latest version of the operating system for iPhones. So what's new?

iOS 18 introduces extensive customization options for the Home Screen, allowing users to arrange apps and widgets anywhere, even above the dock. Users can also apply dark or tinted effects to icons and make them larger. The Control Center has been redesigned for quick access to media controls, Home controls, and connectivity options, with the ability to add third-party app controls. Additionally, users can now customize or remove the controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen.

As for The Photos app, it has been updated with a simplified single view that includes the familiar grid layout and new collections to help users browse by themes. A new carousel view highlights favorite people, pets, and places daily, with autoplay content bringing the photo library to life.

iMessage in iOS 18 includes new text effects that amplify letters, words, phrases, and emojis with animation. The Messages app now supports the RCS protocol for richer media and more reliable group messaging with non-Apple contacts. In addition, iOS 18 introduces Messages via satellite for when cellular and Wi-Fi connections are unavailable, allowing users to send and receive texts, emojis, and Tapbacks.

Safari in iOS 18 now uses AI to surface key information about webpages, such as summarizing articles or letting users listen to music directly from an article. The Reader feature has been redesigned to offer summaries and tables of contents for longer articles.

The new Passwords app provides a centralized location for accessing passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. It also includes alerts for common security weaknesses like weak, reused, or leaked passwords.

In terms of privacy features in iOS 18, they include the ability to lock and hide apps, keeping app content private and hidden from search and notifications. Users can also choose to share specific contacts with apps and keep their devices private when connecting third-party accessories.

Also Apple Intelligence brings new AI capabilities to iOS 18. Writing tools are integrated across Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps, allowing users to rewrite, proofread, and summarize text. The new Image Playground app lets users create images with animation, illustration, or sketch styles. In the Photos app, Memories can create stories from photos and videos, and the Clean Up tool removes unwanted objects from backgrounds. Also OpenAI's ChatGPT will be integrated into Siri and the systemwide writing tools.

iOS 18 is not just an update, it’s a whole transformation aimed at making your iPhone experience more enjoyable and innovative. Get ready to test these new features this fall!
