Chaos has introduced Project Arena, a cutting-edge toolset aimed at redefining virtual production by offering a simpler, faster alternative to traditional game engines. This innovation is designed to bridge the gap between offline rendering and real-time display, enabling studios to use Chaos’s V-Ray renderer to project the same assets on LED walls with full ray tracing, without needing preprocessing.

Project Arena allows the seamless rendering of assets created in Digital Content Creation (DCC) applications such as Maya, Houdini, and 3ds Max, onto LED walls in real time. This capability serves as a virtual backdrop for previsualization or in-camera VFX, leveraging the technology from Chaos Vantage, Chaos’s real-time ray tracing renderer. Remarkably, Project Arena can handle a quarter of a trillion polygons at 60fps on a single GPU, showcasing its potential to transform virtual production workflows.

Chaos aims to challenge the dominance of Unreal Engine in the virtual production space with Project Arena. Unlike Unreal Engine, which requires a conversion process for offline assets, Project Arena simplifies the workflow by allowing the direct use of V-Ray assets. This eliminates the need for scene stripping, asset conversion, or baking, reducing the time to transition V-Ray animations to LED walls to around 10 minutes.

This streamlined process not only cuts down production times but also ensures asset consistency across pre- and post-production phases without compromising quality. As Project Arena is in its initial testing phase, Chaos has not yet announced a commercial release date or pricing, but studios interested in exploring its capabilities can register their interest.

With Project Arena, Chaos is set to offer an efficient and high-quality alternative to existing workflows, simplifying virtual production while maintaining consistency and quality across production phases. This toolset represents a significant advancement in virtual production technology, poised to become a vital resource for studios looking to enhance their capabilities in this evolving field.
